Things went catastrophically wrong. It was a real fiasco. We tried to {compensate|handle the situation, but it was like trying to stop a flood with a cocktail stick. We're still picking up the pieces and feeling the sting of this disaster.

This crisis has spiraled out of control. It's a total disaster. We've tried anything to fix it, but nothing seems to function. At this point, it feels like we're hopelessly stuck. Frankly, I don't know what else to do. This is a train wreck of epic proportions.
This is So Bad, It's Funny (Not Really)
Sometimes you find yourself face-to-face with situations so awful that you can't help but laugh. It's like your brain tries to make sense of the sheer extent of unadulterated absurdity and just gives up, opting for laughter as a coping mechanism.
But then, you realize that it's not really hilarious. It's just plain terrible. And the laughter you felt morphs into a wistful, melancholic sound.
Ultimately, you are left with a sense of confusion. You question about the meaning of it all. Was this intended to be funny?
Or were we just simply unfortunate enough to witness this spectacle unfold?
Tragedy of Epic Proportions
The volcanic eruption struck suddenly, destroying entire towns in its wake. Buildings shattered like house of cards, and the roar that ensued was deafening. Thousands were buried beneath rubble, their fate uncertain. The severity of the disaster was unprecedented, leaving survivors to confront a future forever scarred.

Worst Day Ever
It all started with an case of terrible hair. I couldn't do it to look right. As I was dashing out the door, I fell and landed all over the floor. To make matters worse, I was totally running behind for work.

It all started out horribly with a simple mishap/incident/screw-up. But then everything went from bad to absolutely terrible. A series/chain/cascade of unfortunate/awful/disastrous events unfolded/occurred/piled on top each other, leaving me feeling like I was in a nightmare/horror movie/comedy of errors. It's the kind of situation where you just want to throw your hands up.
